my garden I leave test tiles on a weather exposed wall just so I can
see what happens to them over time. They just get dusty... There's some glass out there and ceramics with various glazes. And for a few months I've had some Polymer Clay sitting on the wall as well ! I sealed it with non yellowing exterior satin varnish first and I wanted to see if it would crack, fade, or be eaten by snails. I always suggest that Polymer Clay tiles should be used for purely indoor work because they are not water resistant in the same way that glass and ceramic glazes are. But to tell you the truth, nothing has happened to the sealed Polymer outside other than becoming as dusty as the other tiles do. The colours are still vibrant, permanent and light resistant and the tiles have not cracked. I'm just slightly annoyed that the Magpie didn't think they were pretty enough to steal ! I don't know what will happen to the polymer over years and years in the garden but I do think it's a stronger material than we give it credit for. So.....Polymer tiles! WHY USE POLYMER when you can have glass or ceramics? Well for one thing, there are some techniques that are just easier in Polymer, and there is a larger palette of colours available too. It is easy to cut with a good craft knife and the pieces can be used for beads, pendants, jewellery and embellishing of all kinds. Polymer can be drilled, sanded, painted, varnished and it takes all sorts of adhesives. It is a perfect medium where weight is an issue and it's safe for children to use. I LOVE POLYMER !! I
just wish I had more time to experiment with it. If there's any
thing you would like me to make you, just email me. |
